I wonder if there's a functionality either core or by add-ons to have custom taxonomy.
For example, instead of having general "tags" that can be anything you have a "dogs" taxonomy which terms are for example: Labrador, Chihuahua, Shih Tzu... etc
From what I see XF could get close to that with custom fields except that I'd need to list every term (dog breed) myself. You might think well do that, but imagine is not dogs but things that can have thousands of options, I can't sit there typing...
